Chapter Nine
Everly
Lunch was a quick affair. We sat in what had become our spot, the stairs, once again. Ember slept in my lap, exhausted from dealing with tiny children all day. She swore they were demons, but that wasn’t the feeling I got from her. She’d enjoyed herself more than she wanted to admit.
I rested with my back against the wall, my eyes closed more often than not. The guys noticed my lack of energy, and Ren became angry at his mother and sisters for asking me to change. I tried to tell him it was fine, that I was fine.
“It’s not fine,” he hissed from his spot on the step. “You’re not a fucking sideshow. This isn’t a fucking circus.”
He started to stand, but I pulled at his pants, making him pause. I jerked my chin towards his niece. Leah sat as close as she could without actually sitting with us, and I was sure she’d overheard us. Her head hung, and she picked at what was left of her lunch.
“Shit,” he mumbled.
“I really am fine. Just a little tired. I’ll get a couple more sodas or something. It’s not like I haven’t done it before. How’s the fencing going?”
As he sat back down, Dix answered for him. “It’s going like shit. Do you see my hands?” He stuck them so close to my face that I could smell the leather from the gloves he’d been wearing.
“What’s wrong with them? I’m not seeing it.” I shrugged. There wasn’t anything different about them that I noticed.
“Well, they’re healed now, but they did have holes in them not too long ago. Damned barbed wire keeps sticking me. What are you laughing about, Ko? You’re worse than I am at this shit.”
“But you don’t hear me bitching about it, do you?” Ko asked as he shook his head.
“They’re both fucking horrible at this shit. I had to send them both over to help the little kids. Fucking Dixin about decapitated his dumb ass,” Tor added.
“See? Decapitated!” Dix nearly shrieked.
“Oh, that was your fault. You have to watch where you’re walking. It’s not Rafe’s fault you’re so short that it was neck level for you. And that you were goofing off.” Ren sighed.
I glanced around the room, trying to figure out how someone would pull it that high. Dix was shorter than the rest of my guys, but he wasn’t that short. When a man walked up to Leah and began talking to her, I realized exactly how it happened. There was a slight hill at one point of the line, and Leah’s father was a fucking giant. I’d just thought Ren was tall. Even though I’d seen all of them, it never really stuck in my head. I’d been too concerned about fucking up or getting away from everyone to compare heights. Rafe pulled the wire from the top of the hill, and with his already tall ass and Dix’s already short ass, it worked out to be the right height for Dix’s neck.
